Citroen is the latest manufacturer to move away from a boxy, utilitarian estate version of its upper medium competitor.

Like Honda's latest Accord, the new C5 Tourer replaces its square wagon predecessor with a more sporting, modern styling.

But it's come at a price. While the old C5 wasn't the most attractive, it did meet the main objective for any estate - load-carrying ability.

The old C5 was 58 litres bigger with the rear seats in place, and had almost 200 litres more space at maximum carrying capacity. The new C5 doesn't fare any better against its rivals, either. Though boot space with the rear seats up is virtually the same as the VW Passat and Renault Laguna, it's 37 litres shy of the Mondeo. Worse still, seats down the C5's 1462 litre capacity doesn't get within 130 litres of any of its rivals, and is 271 behind the Mondeo.
