Fiat 500 1.4: One Minute Test Drive

Date: 29 April 2008   |   Author:

Fiat 500
Category: City car
Price range: £7900-£10,700
Key rival: Peugeot 107

What's new: Fiat's new baby is the current European Car of the Year and is aiming to grab some of the Mini's territory as a fashionable premium small car.

Excellent: The 500's cheeky little looks certainly grab plenty of attention, though a straw poll of our office didn't give it universal approval.

Good: The 1.4-litre 100PS engine is nippy enough to pick your way through the town. An RV of 40% after three years is also reasonable, leading to the low 30.4 pence per mile.

Average: Cabin quality isn't great. It looks good but like the Mini there are large areas of shiny plastic. Boot space is better than expected, but it's at the expense of any kind of rear seat space.

Poor: The ride was described as akin to driving a bouncy castle by one member of the team. You're also paying a hefty £10,510 price for the fashion element.

Verdict: Cutesy, trendy city car that, to a large extent, puts style over substance.
