The start point for the best source of fleet information

Ford Focus 2.0 TDCI Zetec 5dr Powershift: Test Drive

Date: 30 June 2008   |   Author: Tristan Young

Category: Lower medium
P11D price: £19,100
Key rival: VW Golf DSG

Ford has launched a rival to VW's clever DSG gearbox.

The Powershift system works like an automatic by doing away with the clutch pedal, but without the power-sapping and fuel consuming downsides.

In full automatic 'drive' mode it is better than its VW equivalent for smoothness and is nearly as good as the best conventional automatics.

The only negative is that at a constant 30mph it 'hunts' for the right gear, particularly if, say, you're going up hill.

Manual gear selection mode is achieved by flicking the gearlever to the right and then pushing forward (downshift) or back (upshift) - there are no wheel-mounted paddles to change gear.

Manual mode gives you greater control of the vehicle - for instance by allowing you to pull away in second gear, which is useful in slippery conditions. It will also allow double or triple down shifts, although they take their time. Double upshifts are also possible.

Choosing a Powershift gearbox will add £1200 to the price of a Focus (VW charges £1485 for DSG for the Golf). The Powershift gearbox will also drop the fuel consumption to 48.6mpg from 51.3 in the manual, which is good for an auto. CO2 suffers, too, with a hike from 144g/km (19% BIK) in the manual to 154g/km (21%).

Verdict: At £19,100 and with a cost per mile of 47.0p, according to Emmox Carcost, the Focus Powershift is a desirable hatchback.
