The start point for the best source of fleet information

Hyundai i800: Test Drive

Hyundai i800
Category: MPV
P11D price: £19,230
Key rival: VW Caravelle

There's a new alternative for fleets needing to transport eight people plus luggage - the Hyundai i800.

The budget people-mover boasts a huge 851 litres of luggage space behind the two rearmost three-person benches, which both fold in a 60:40 split to further increase load-carrying capability. Big sliding rear doors and a middle row that shifts forward means three adults will find it a doddle hopping into the back seats.

Power comes from a 2.5-litre 170PS diesel engine, although there is a more efficient 130PS version coming late this year for £1000 less than this model. That MPV does though lose some of this version's attractive kit count - the lower-powered alternative won't have standard privacy glass, heated seats, front fog lights or parking sensors. Air conditioning and ESP anti-skid control will, though, still be standard.

Predictably, the i800 is van-like to drive, although visibility is good. The 170PS engine has a lot of bulk to haul and does so with moderate success but without performance pretentions. The interior fittings are, however, less commercial vehicle than the slightly crude driving experience.

The average fuel consumption claim of 33.2mpg is reasonable for such a heavy model, with emissions quoted at 225g/km. Both figures can be expected to improve slightly when the 130PS alternative arrives at the end of this year.

Hyundai is targeting smaller fleets and business-to-business operators such as hotel chains because the genuine eight-seater capacity is unrivalled at this price. The brand reckons on being able to shift 375 units this year, with more than 50 orders already taken.

The i800 is a handy new budget model for fleets or individuals needing to regularly carry large numbers of people, and it's pretty well equipped for its sub-£20,000 price tag. If you limit expectations regarding driving pleasure or cabin luxury then a pleasant surprise awaits.
