The start point for the best source of fleet information

Mercedes B-class: Test Drive

Date: 12 June 2008   |   Author: Guy Bird

Category: Mini-MPV
P11D price: £20,850
Key rival: Ford C-max

What's new: Mercedes' facelifted compact MPV offers more efficient engines and more gadgets for similar money this July. The range also gets Stop/start tech on the petrol B150 and 170 from October.

Excellent: 7% economy improvement to 50.4mpg and 148g/km CO2 is great for a diesel auto. New SE trim gets standard hill start assist and adaptive brake lights that flash under heavy braking to warn drivers behind.

Good: New SE trim adds a panoramic fixed roof (normally £440) within a small overall £150 price increase. Large 544-2245-litre boot space is very flexible.

Average: Interior quality. Upscale volume players like VW, Ford and Honda match or better it.

Poor: The 109PS 180 CDI engine fed back serous vibration and noise to the cabin and lacked punch with the CVT auto. High-sided 'bobbly' ride and unresponsive steering.

Verdict: A strange fish three years ago and little better now as the competition has improved.
