Mercedes CLC: Test Drive (continued)

Date: 28 April 2008   |   Author: Alisdair Suttie

Mercedes CLC
Category: Sports
Prices: £19,920-£27,240
Key rival: BMW 1-series

The Sport model costs £1100 more than the SE across the range of four petrol and two turbodiesel engines, and comes with 18-inch alloys, metallic paint and Artico faux leather upholstery as standard, in addition to the SE's climate control and parking sensors.

The CLC 220 CDI has much-improved economy and emissions over its predecessor, now returning an average 47.9mpg, compared to the old model's 42.8mpg, and emitting 156g/km of CO2 in standard six-speed manual gearbox form rather than the old car's 174g/km. Go for the five-speed auto and emissions rise to 166g/km.

The 150PS 2.1-litre turbodiesel engine feels reasonably brisk in manual form, but the auto blunts its edge. And when driven rapidly it soon loses the refinement that makes it a decent motorway cruiser. The car also suffered from a good deal of wind whistle from the optional £1400 Panorama Package that consists of a full-length glass sunroof with blinds and rain sensing wipers. Other optional packs include Visibility that brings bi-xenon cornering headlights, Exclusive and Comfort.

The interior is comfortable for those in the front and build quality is up to usual Merc standards. Rear leg space is limited and headroom is fine, while the boot can handle most luggage demands. But despite the positives, the CLC is unlikely to unsettle its BMW or Audi rivals.
