Mercedes Viano X-clusive 3.0 CDI long: Test Drive

Date: 19 December 2008   |   Author: Tristan Young

P11D price: £32,480
Category: MPV
Key rival: VW Transporter

What's new: Bling version of the Viano MPV/minibus cross powered by a 204PS 3.0-litre diesel linked to an auto gearbox. Six leather seats inside and a body kit outside. Aimed at the chauffeur/private hire market.

Excellent: Given the standard version is pretty smart means this is a seriously luxurious way of transporting clients. The auto 'box, powerful engine and parking sensors also mean driving and parking's a doddle too.

Good: Refinement and comfort levels are top-notch. Seats can be folded or moved around to suit your requirements. There's a foldaway table too.

Average: Although it is a Merc, it's not an S-class so the more snobby clients might not be so impressed. Mind you, it is £30k cheaper than an S-class.

Poor: The cost of extras can bump the price up. Our test car came with nearly £14,000-worth of options. Eek!

Verdict: A welcome and neat addition to the range and the market. Ideal for those needing both luxury and space. Just be careful when ticking the options list.
