Our Fleet Test Drive: Skoda Octavia Scout - 4th Report

It's been a month of extremes for the Skoda Octavia Scout.
Much of its time has been spent in airport car parks awaiting my return from various business trips, while the rest of the time it's been pounding the UK's motorway network.
The most notable trip was a 700-mile there-and-back-in-a-day jaunt from home in Perthshire to Stamford in Lincolnshire. An early start made me appreciate the effective heating and demisting qualities of the Scout, while a cross-country route from Edinburgh to the A1 near Newcastle again underlined how good the Scout is on rural roads. The little traffic I encountered when most sensible people were still in bed was easily overtaken. Then the Scout proved its worth in the ebb and flow of morning commuters on the A1 south.
At the end of the day, I'd racked up more than 700 miles during 12 hours of driving. After this, I can confidently conclude the Octavia Scout has seat comfort to rival the best. There's simple height adjustment by a ratchet lever to the right-hand side of the driver's seat, lumbar adjustment, too, and the steering wheel has plenty of scope for manoeuvre.
My only gripe this month is the roads are filthy thanks to all the rain (so much for summer.) and the Octavia Scout's tailgate accumulates filth like a teenage schoolboy. There's no problem with vision courtesy of the rear wash-wipe, but my hand comes up mucky every time I open the boot. Still, at least there are curry hooks in the sides of the boot walls to keep my food shopping from flailing around the luggage floor, which is vital when you've just got home from a long trip or the airport.
