Having only been able to sample the top-spec 175PS diesel version of Renault's new small off-roader at the original launch, we've now tried the volume model that's arrived in the UK.

That's the one fitted with the more fleet-friendly 150PS diesel, offering a £1200 lower P11D, plus three BIK bands lower and an extra 2.9mpg of fuel consumption compared to its quicker sibling.

It's clear that 150PS is enough, as the engine is refined and never feels particularly overworked. The steering is uncomfortably light, though, particularly when cornering at high speed, such as motorway slip roads, but buyers looking for driver enjoyment should be shopping in a different sector anyway. The Koleos also benefits from Renault's recent focus on interior quality and is both usefully designed and of a decent quality.

The big problem is that the CO2 emissions, and by association economy, are still pretty high at 191g/km. That's between two and five benefit-in-kind bands above most of the Renault's serious rivals, which makes a serious difference to a driver, and a company's, monthly bills. A cost-per-mile figure of 56.7p reflects this, and is the biggest problem with Renault's new entrant into this shrinking segment.
