Renault Koleos: Test Drive

Renault has taken a while to enter the 4x4 crossover segment, but is hoping the Koleos can make up for lost time.

The analogy Renault used at the car's launch was that of the tortoise and the hare, suggesting it has the advantage of learning from the initial mistakes made by other manufacturers.

One area in which Renault is aiming to have the edge is practicality - 70 litres of cubbyholes, under-floor bins and overhead lockers means cabin storage is in abundance.

The boot is a reasonable 450 litres and a lot of thought has clearly gone into the design too. The top half of the split tailgate makes access easier in tight spots, while the bottom half folds down to remove any loading lip and provide a convenient place to perch.

Renault has also included the Super-Fold system seen on the new Laguna estate. One handle drops the rear seats completely flat.

However, if you're going to be fashionably late to a party it makes sense to arrive stylishly, a feat the Koleos hasn't managed.

The front is akin to a beefed-up Megane, lacking the aggression an off-roader normally carries, while at the back there is a strange dip in the centre of the rear windscreen that's reminiscent of a duck's backside.
