Renault has given the range-topping Laguna a sporty feel and a fancy GT tag.
However, the biggest addition on the new model is a four-wheel steering system called Active Drive. Thanks to this, the GT's handling is fantastic compared to the standard Laguna. It's assured through corners, while the system also helps low-speed manoeuvring.
The GT also gets a host of equipment over Dynamique trim, including hands-free entry, rear parking sensors, sports front seats and several cosmetic tweaks to make this top model stand out.
The 205PS 2.0-litre petrol engine gets the car to 62mph in an impressive 7.8secs. However, it produces a thirst of 34.4mpg and a cost of 57.9ppm - it may be an unfair comparison, but the 1.5dCi Laguna at the bottom of the range works out at only 27.5ppm. This figure's not helped by typically hefty Renault depreciation, and other Renault quirks also remain - a spongy gearchange and the irritating indicator tick. However, it is still the second best Laguna after the 1.5dCi.
Verdict: GT bookmarks the Laguna range, impressive at the top and bottom, but less so in-between. It's a great engine and drive, but costs are prohibitive and 1.5 dCi makes business sense
