The Turbo-X gives us a glance at Saab's first XWD - or cross-wheel drive - 4x4 system that will be available on the Aero from 2009.

The four-wheel drive divides traction between the wheels when necessary, leading to a feeling of stability through tight bends.

And with 284PS and a 0-60mph time of 5.4 seconds for the saloon version, it needs it because in faster bends the front wheels still run wide.

Unfortunately, a substandard gearbox means quick shifting is difficult when changing down at speed.

A P11D of £32,145 and a cost of 83.2 pence per mile for an outdated-feeling car is steep too. But if nothing else, with only 500 coming to the UK, exclusivity will be guaranteed.

Verdict: The promise of a Saab with front end grip is nearly delivered.?Expensive but exclusive 9-3
