What's new: In the current absence of a hot hatch vRS version of the new Fabia, Skoda has introduced a new Sport trim aimed at part-filling the temporary void. Available with a choice of four engines, we tried the Fabia Sport in the range-topping 105ps 1.9 diesel.
Excellent: The P11D of £12,630 and decent residual values means a good 31.0 pence per mile figure. Average fuel economy figure of 57.7mpg and an 18% BIK banding also help keep running costs low.
Good: For a supermini, the Fabia's cabin and boot space offer almost unrivalled practicality in the segment. The Fabia is also comfortable on longer runs, with the 1.9 diesel offering plenty of performance. Spec levels are good for a £12,000 supermini.
Average: Despite the bodykit, the Fabia Sport doesn't look particularly sporty. Skoda has obviously left a bit of hot hatch design space for the vRS model rumoured to be coming next year.
Poor: Engine refinement isn't good from the clattery 1.9 diesel, though performance is good. Some of the interior plastics betray the car's Budget roots.
Verdict: A well-priced, practical supermini with impressive running costs, even if the Sport element is subtle and purely cosmetic.
