Volvo XC70 3.2 auto: One Minute Test Drive

Date: 05 February 2008   |   Author: Tristan Young

xc70
Category: Estate
Price range: £30,300-£35,370
Key Rival: Audi Allroad

What's new: Our first chance to get our hands on the 3.2-litre petrol version of Volvo's new XC70 - the off-roader based around the V70 estate.

Excellent: The 3.2-litre engine may be the thirsty option, but it does wonders for the driving experience. The six-cylinder, rather than the powerful but heavy D5 diesel, is light, responsive and refined.

Good: Price may look steep but high levels of equipment mean it's attractive against rivals such as the Audi Allroad.

Average: A cost per mile of 54.1p is middling while all-wheel drive and powerful engine work well for towing or tackling light off-roading.

Poor: The downside to picking the 3.2-litre petrol is a combined fuel figure of 24.8mpg and a 35% BIK attracting 272g/km of CO2.

Verdict: Straight-six engine is easily the pick of the XC70 range, but fuel costs may deter buyers.
