The CC also features several firsts. It's the first VW to have the firm's new DCC adaptive suspension system that's switchable between sport, normal and comfort settings (it's standard on the top GT spec); VW's Lane Assist system, which senses when the car's drifting out of its lane on the motorway and gentle corrects it, debuts as an option; and the CC is the first Volkswagen to come with a redesigned climate control system.

Four in five CCs sold in the UK will be diesel-powered, and more than half of that will be the 140PS 2.0-litre TDI driven here. It's the new common-rail diesel version already found in the Tiguan small 4x4, and is a marked improvement, both in refinement and economy, over the engine it replaces. It's now pretty much as refined as anything in the class, and suits the Passat CC more than its clattery predecessor would have done. Emissions are more than adequate at 153g/km, putting the CC into the 21% BIK banding.

Unsurprisingly, the CC drives much like a Passat would. That means refined and comfortable motorway cruising, as long as you don't have the DCC system set to the harsh sport setting.

The subject of direct rivals is interesting in that there aren't any. VW's talking about up to half of CC buyers coming out of a Passat saloon, but the price premium also starts edging it up towards the liks of the Audi A4 or BMW 320d, especially given Volkswagen's intentions of creating a luxury impression. There are also traditional two-door coupes such as the Peugeot 407 to throw in, making for something of a mixed bag of competitors.

Final CC pricing has yet to be confirmed so we can't confirm costs yet, and the way VW has structured the CC spec range means direct price comparison with the standard model is impossible. Yet it will be interesting to plot the CC's progress against its own saloon sibling, to see how this slightly confusing new model slides into VW's burgeoning range.
