VW's Tiguan is a car that divides opinion. It's a 4x4, so tree-hugging greenies will denounce it as bad for the environment, while school-run mums will love it for its kid-carrying appeal.

Thankfully, business car managers can take a more measured approach and consider matters of the head rather than the heart. Unfortunately, the Tiguan splits opinion here, too.

We tested the 140PS diesel automatic, which means there are precious few rivals because many other small 4x4 producers don't fit auto gearboxes to their diesels (Honda and Toyota take note).

On price, the Volkswagen looks great value, especially against more prestigious metal such as the BMW X3 and Land Rover Freelander. Couple this to impressively low depreciation, plus a good fuel figure, and the cost per mile looks great too.

However, the four-wheel drive version of the Nissan Qashqai has an even lower price and depreciation figure so wins on costs - the ultimate decider for a fleet manager.
