VW Transporter Sportline Kombi: Test Drive

Date: 17 December 2008   |   Author:

Price (ex VAT): £25,830
Category: Medium van
Key rival: Ford Transit Sportvan

VW has been filling out its Sportline brand in more than one direction. As well as the Caddy Sportline, the firm has also launched a Kombi version of the Transporter Sportline.

The five-Seat version of the Transporter benefits from the same Sportline upgrades of lowered suspension, 18-inch alloys, chrome detailing and front and rear spoilers.

The layout, though, means there are only two seats in front, instead of the three in the straight van version, with a three-seat bench behind.

Power still comes from the 174PS 2.5-litre diesel engine, and like all Sportlines, the Kombi gets stand-out standard Tornado Red paintwork with silver and black on the options list. A bulkhead to keep passengers and load separate is also optional.

The downside, as with all Sportline versions, is the hefty price tag for such a good-looking commercial vehicle.

Verdict: Not cheap, but it's as good-looking and practical as vans get
