Ford Mondeo Econetic: Test Drive Review

Key rival: Vauxhall Insignia

Ford has come to the decision that those drivers wanting a tax- and fuel-efficient car don't necessarily want to miss out on the toys that come with better-equipped models.

Hence the new Mondeo Econetic Titanium, a 115PS, sub-140g/km version of the Econetic, but with the six-disc CD changer, alloys, sports seats and auto lights and wipers that drivers might not want to compromise on. Ford is aiming squarely at the corporate sector with its new development, which arrives at the same time as the standard Econetic version with the same engine, introduced to meet fleet requests for a six-speed gearbox version, rather than the five-speed of the original 1.8 diesel Econetic.

Despite only toting 115PS from it's economically tuned diesel, the Econetic copes well and only feels underpowered under hard acceleration.

The biggest problem for the new model is that it's actually £150 cheaper to go for the more powerful 140PS 2.0 diesel. The tax bills will be slightly higher as the latter comes with an emissions figure of 156g/km, and is 6.4mpg less economical at 47.9mpg, but for many that will be a sacrifice worth making.

VerdictWell-kitted efficient upper medium
car. Just a shame it’s pricier than
more powerful non-Econetic sibling.
