Key rival: BMW X5

Infiniti, the new prestige car brand from Nissan, is finally here in the UK and we've kicked off with the FX37 S, the firm's large 4x4 aimed squarely at the BMW X5.

Like all Infinitis, the FX is only available with a petrol engine. In this case it's a 320PS 3.7-litre V6. The harm this does to the car's fleet potential is huge because the official fuel figure is 23.4mpg and the CO2's in the 35% benefit-in-kind tax bracket.

However, if drivers can afford the fuel the car is appealing because it's stylish and different from other 4x4s in the market. The FX37S is also loaded with equipment including clever cruise control, keyless entry and start, satnav, heated seats, Bluetooth, useful 360-degree parking camera and much more. This level of kit means the list price looks attractive, although fleets should remember the residuals are untested.

The only downside for user-choosers is the poor internal packaging. For such a large car there isn't the kind of interior space you'd expect. The boot needs to be singled out for particular criticism as it's only 410 litres; the BMW X5's boot is 50% bigger at 620 litres.
