At the pinnacle of the new E-class range is the E500.
It's the only car in Mercedes' new line-up that doesn't carry the BlueEfficiency badge. But that's not surprising given the 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine and 0-62mph time of 5.2 seconds.
While only a handful of top businessmen will opt for this version, it is a splendid car in an old-fashioned way in terms of excess.
Depreciation may be frightening (the RV is 32%) and running costs not much better at 105.1ppm according to KwikCarcost, but the E500 shows how capable today's cars could be in terms of all-round ability if you don't worry about money.
The level of technology, both in terms of safety and driver comforts, coupled to the performance and refinement easily matches that of the market above. It almost makes the whole life cost figure seem reasonable. Almost.
