Our Fleet Test Drive: BMW 330d - 5th Report

330d in the middle
Category: Upper medium
P11D price: £33,555
Key rival: Audi A4

Our 330d has been out to the countryside, couriering two people and a dog down to Hampshire for a long weekend.

While some adults have complained about the rear leg space - not helped by the excellent and large M Sport front seats - there's plenty of room for a terrier. And though the boot's a good 20 litres shy of any premium rival at 460 litres, we still crammed in a weekend's worth of stuff without thought about how to pack it sensibly.

The 330d once more proved its strengths as an all-rounder, equally adept at a Friday night journey around the M25 as it was on the open stretches of Hampshire roads. It also registered an impressive 40.6mpg for the round trip from south London.

My initial worries about the BMW's ride quality, especially on much-criticised run-flat tyres, have proved largely unfounded. Yes, it's firm, but I'd go with sporting rather than harsh, and it certainly isn't enough to make you think twice about hefty journeys. As well as Hampshire, the 330d has made a football-related trip north to Huddersfield and numerous other journeys that have seen us put 7000 miles on the clock in four months.
