Peugeot 5008: Test Drive Review

Category: Mini-MPV
P11D price: £20,415
Key rival: Renault Grand Scenic

It's been a while coming but Peugeot has finally entered the mini-MPV market with a true rival for the Vauxhall Zafira, Renault Grand Scenic and VW Touran.

The new model is a seven-seater designed as part of the Peugeot 308 hatchback and 3008 'crossover' line-up, sitting below the upper medium 407, but is confusing titled the 5008.

Fortunately, Peugeot has dropped the gaping mouth family look to create an MPV that's stylish and understated, if a little lacking in visual character, though that is normal for this family-orientated segment where practicality is the most important thing by some distance.

Peugeot claims to have benchmarked its own sister brand, Citroen, with the 5008 in terms of interior functionality, and the rear two seats fold into the boot floor while the middle three individual seats fold forward to create a flat load area behind the front seats.

The 5008 will just about take seven adults, with the middle row of chairs slid forward a touch, but those middle passengers will find their knees banging against the hard plastic aircraft-style table that folds down from the back of the front seats. Taller adults in the middle row will also find their head-room limited by the way the roof curves to accommodate the panoramic glass roof that is optional on our test cars and standard on the top-spec Exclusive model.

In the front, Peugeot has succeeded in creating a commanding higher driving position that doesn't feel too lofty, and the interior quality is showing a continuation of the promise of the new Nissan Qashqai-rivalling 3008, although it isn't perfect, with some bits of trim in the back appearing to be where Peugeot has saved some money,

The driving experience also continues the 3008's promise to a certain extent, although it's more on the comfort side than sporty, which is understandable given the family target. It's pleasant enough to drive, however, suffers surprisingly little by way of body roll and is comfortable over roads in disrepair.

Peugeot is also showing some sign of promise in cost per mile terms. Historically a thorn in the side of the brand's fleet aspirations, residual values for the 5008 are better than its three rivals, including a 3.2 percentage point advantage over the Volkswagen Touran. In the 150PS 2.0 diesel form driven here, it's also in the same 20% tax band as the Renault, even though the French car has 20PS less power at 130PS (there isn't a 150PS manual Grand Scenic for direct comparison).

That's why we're giving the victory to the 5008, despite the fact it's half a penny per mile more expensive than the Grand Scenic to run. Its extra power, better residual value and all-round appeal combine to outpoint its rival. The Peugeot is as good a bet as anything in the sector from a driver and family perspective, is well-equipped with cruise control, boot net, alloys, ESP and air conditioning all standard on this mid-spec Sport trim, and costs significantly less to run than its other competitors thanks to that very competitive residual value.
