Our first drive of the all-new Megane since the international left-hand drive-only launch sees us test what is expected to be the most popular model to fleet, the five-door 1.5-litre diesel in Dynamic trim.
There's no faulting the price, power, equipment and economy equation. The 1.5dCi comes into the sub-121g/km category for minimal benefit-in-kind taxation and with an official consumption figure above 60mpg no one's going to complain about fuel costs.
Equipment is good, too, with aircon, alloys, trip computer and cruise all standard.
However, in the change to right-hand drive a few things have deteriorated. The pedal area is not as well designed for UK cars with an odd lip at the base of the pedals.
The gearchange, too, seems less smooth compared to the more powerful 130PS left-hooker we drove late last year. Interestingly, despite being a six-speeder, at 70mph in top gear the car is revving at 2500rpm, which seems high and can't help fuel economy. At this constant speed the trip computer was reading 50mpg - not bad, but the new Insignia diesel under the same circumstances is revving at 1750rpm and showing 60mpg on the trip.
What's retained, fortunately, is the excellent ride and handling combination of the Megane and the interior quality feel, even if a digital speedo isn't to everyone's taste.
Running costs, though, are competitive at 38.1ppm, helped by the low emissions, a claimed 62.8mpg and reasonable RVs.
