Saab 9-3 Aero XWD 2.0 saloon: Test Drive Review

Key rival: Audi A4

The 210PS 2.0-litre petrol 9-3, fitted with the XWD four-wheel drive system, is the latest addition to the Saab compact executive line-up.

It's good-looking, which gives it an edge over the equivalent BMW, Audi or Merc, but there are several issues that will put it off limits for fleet lists.

The biggest problem is residuals - according to KwikCarcost just 22.6% is retained after three years/60,000 miles. The RV on an equivalent Audi A4 or BMW 3-series will be in the high 30% region, although the Saab's figures won't have been helped by uncertainty over the brand's future.

CO2 and mpg are also poor next to a four-wheel drive Audi A4 of similar engine size and power. All that means a huge cost per mile figure of 70.1p.

The interior is also disappointing - good at first glance, but familiarity shows up the inconsistent trim gaps. It's a shame, given the exterior looks rival anything in the class.
