Key rival: Ford Focus

Toyota is the latest brand to add stop-start technology to its range.

The Auris one of three models to be fitted with a new 1.3-litre 100PS engine, complete with the technology that cuts the engine when the car's at a standstill.

It's as slick as any of the systems out there, impossible to catch out and, in a new innovation, actually features a clock that ticks along to show how long the stop-start has been active for. It's a neat little feature, especially as the time begins to mount up from second to minutes and even hours, and highlights the system's worthiness and effectiveness.

The Auris Stop & Start is one of the few upper medium petrol models to get below 140g/km for a 15% BIK banding. While it never feels powerful, the 100PS engine is enough for the Auris in urban situations, although drivers of models with more go might feel they're missing out on higher-speed roads.

As usual with Toyota, the Auris enjoys a decent cost per mile figure, which in this case is 33.7p.
