The start point for the best source of fleet information

Volkswagen Passat R-line 1.8 TSI 4dr: Test Drive Review

Date: 20 August 2009   |   Author: Tristan Young

VW Passat R-line comes with 17inch alloys
Category: Upper medium
P11D price: £18,320
Key rival: Ford Mondeo

Volkswagen has simplified its range by dropping the Sport and SEL and inserting the new R-line trim between the existing S and Highline models.

The R-design offers an impressive level of kit for a mid-spec trim including aircon, cruise control, alloys, body kit, aux socket and front seats with adjustable lumbar support.

We drove the Passat R-line powered by the wonderfully zingy 160PS 1.8T petrol engine, but if you must have a car below 161g/km, as so many fleet policies rightly dictate, then it's also available with the 110PS and 140PS 2.0 TDI engines.

The R-line certainly looks the part, although we're not sure about ordering in white, but the low-profile tyres harm the ride comfort.

Fortunately for VW that's about the only complaint we have about the car. And we've saved the best for last, the price of the R-line (in 1.8T form) is just £18,550 or nearly £1500 less than the equivalent Ford Mondeo.
