Although the new mk6 Golf might not look different to the mk5, park the two side-by-side and you'll see it is obviously lower and wider, with a narrower grille and new headlamps.
The most popular engine will be the new 110PS 2.0-litre diesel, which emits 128g/km of CO2 and doesn't feel far shy of the 140PS version in performance terms. However, it will be replaced this summer by a new 105PS 1.6-litre diesel that should nestle just below the 121g/km benefit-in-kind tax threshold.
Until the new engine arrives, the Golf will be five benefit-in-kind bands above the equivalent Ford Focus, as the rival 1.6 TDCi is sub-121g/km. That could mean a difference of around £20 per month to the lower rate tax payers likely to be driving these models. But from a company perspective, the Golf's better predicted RVs will help the cost per mile figure stay below the Ford's.
Meanwhile, the SE trim, which more than half of new Golfs will be ordered with, offers auto lights and wipers, cruise control, aux socket and ESP, the latter standard across the range. The SE's optional multifunctional steering wheel with stereo controls was slightly uncomfortable to hold, though, and while the boot looks huge, its 350-litre capacity is 35 litres down on the Focus.
But in every key area the mk6 is better than its predecessor.
