BMW 740d M Sport: Test Drive Review

Key rival: Audi A8

BMW's most powerful diesel engine has been slotted into the 7-series with the addition of the 740d to the luxury model's range.

The 306hp unit costs a shade under £7000 more than the 730d, offering an extra 61hp and a full second shaved from the 0-62mph acceleration time, yet just 1g/km more of CO2 at 181g/km and the same impressive 40.9mpg fuel economy figure.

The introduction of the 740d was aligned with BMW launching an M Sport trim level for its big saloon range. Every 7-series now has the higher trim level available, with new 19-inch alloys, sports seats, the M Sport body styling and interior flourishes. The changes are slightly more subtle than on BMW's smaller models, where M Sport has proved so popular, and cost an eye-watering £5165 over a 7-series in SE trim.

The 740d is a mighty machine, but that hefty initial outlay means you'll pay 130.9p per mile for the privilege. While it's clearly a step above the 730d in performance terms, that car is still very good.
