The rise of the Korean brands is continuing, and Kia's latest model, the new Sorento, is another step forward.

The large 4x4 is cleaner and more powerful than its predecessor, and now comes with seven seats as standard across the diesel line-up.

The new 2.2-litre CRDi diesel packs 191hp, compared to the old model's 166hp, while CO2 emissions drop from 209g/km to 174g/km for the manual in 4x4 form, although that's still above the 161g/km capital allowance tipping point. Fuel consumption improves from 35.8mpg to 42.8mpg. There's also a low-spec two-wheel drive model, but the removal of heavy 4x4 equipment doesn't add up to worthwhile fuel or emissions savings.

Unlike its predecessor, the new off-roader comes with seven seats as standard on all diesel models. Access to the third row is fairly easy, and the rear seats fold flat into the boot floor to leave a 531-litre boot, nearly 100 litres up on the previous Sorento.

To drive, the new car is fundamentally what you'd expect from a large 4x4. It's comfortable and solid, and while not as nimble as the likes of BMW's X5, doesn't feel too unwieldy. The cabin is well-built and logically laid out as well. This KX-2 trim level offers rear parking sensors, cruise control, heated seats and privacy glass.

Kia's growing reputation is also reflected in the whole-life costs. A residual value of 35.8% actually gives the Sorento a whole-life cost of 60.4p. The only fly in the new model's ointment is its sister. The Santa Fe is also a seven-seater, but in top Premium spec is £1500 cheaper, has an almost identical RV and is slightly better equipped than the newer Kia.

But the Sorento is an attractive Budget off-roader for those that need the practicality but can't stretch up to a Volvo XC90 or Land Rover Discovery. It's handicapped in the way all large 4x4s are in terms of emissions, but for fleets that allow these sort of vehicles, it's a lot of car for the money.
