Key rival: Ford Focus

After 11 months with our otherwise well-specified Mazda 3, the lack of rear parking sensors and satellite navigation continues to rankle, particularly as they are standard on equivalent 2.0-litre petrol Sports models.

This reflects the ongoing diesel-pricing penalty. It was no consolation recently when the 3's ample bumpers came perilously close to dinging a neighbour's pride and joy after I transferred from another product equipped with proximity warning parking aids and forgot to make my own sensory checks. Car in gear, brain in neutral, brakes worked.
