Renault Megane CC: Test Drive Review

Roof up and down, the new Megane CC is far better looking than its predecessor, with the advanced roof packaging making for a more resolved design featuring a reduced rear deck compared with the previous one that looked almost large enough to land a helicopter on. For the first time the Megane CC can be described as looking stylishly good from the rear.

Inside, the rear seats are certainly only suitable for smaller human beings to use no more than occasionally, while there was noticeable wobble with the roof down on our test car, coupled with steering wheel vibration. But these are the compromises attached to selecting the drop-top model, which costs £3305 more than the five-door hatchback sibling and emits 15g/km more thanks largely to the extra weight of the roof.

Standard kit on the Dynamique TomTom, the lower of two trim levels, includes Renault's innovative built-in TomTom navigation, as well as 17-inch alloys, auto lights and wipers, Bluetooth and fixed glass wind deflecter. Upgrading to GT, which only offers two higher performance engine options not available in the Dynamique TomTom trim, adds body styling cues and a range of interior enhancements.

The 130hp dCi driven here is one of two sensible fleet choices, coming in £500 cheaper than the 110hp version available only with the firm's EDC automatic gearbox that's three BIK bands and 7.8mpg better off.

There are still compromises attached to choosing this type of car, but the Megane CC, like the latest Peugeot 308 CC, is better built and much better looking than ever.
