VW Golf R 2.0 TSI 4Motion: One Minute Test Drive Review

Date: 29 June 2010   |   Author: Rachel Burgess

What's new: Volkswagen's Golf R is the most powerful and fastest accelerating Golf ever produced. It is 35kg lighter and 19hp more powerful than its outgoing predecessor, the R32, yet is also more efficient.

Excellent: This car is fast, very fast. With rally-car handling and 0-62mph in 5.7 secs, it is top-of-the-range for speed against rivals such as the Ford Focus RS and Seat Leon Cupra R.

Good: While its far from ideal, CO2 is sub-200g/km compared with the old R32's 255g/km, meaning a 28% BIK. And economy rises from 24.4mpg to 33.2mpg - really not bad for this type of car.

Average: It's Smart-looking, but the ubiquity of the Golf, despite the exterior tweaks that set the R apart, means the exterior appearance doesn't match the performance underneath.

Poor: With a £29,865 price tag, the Golf R is £2k pricier than the Ford Focus RS and £4k more than the Seat Cupra R. It costs £6k more than the Golf GTI too, which is only 1.2secs slower.

Verdict: The GTI?makes more sense, but no-one could argue that this model puts a smile on your face.
