Audi RS5 Coupe: One Minute Test Drive

What's new: Audi has topped-off its A5 coupe range with a car designed to take on?BMW's M3 performance king. Available only in?coupe form at this stage, the 4.2-litre V8 engine boasts 450hp, 30hp more than its adversary.
Excellent: The V8 engine makes the kind of noise adored by motoring aficionados, and the acceleration matches the soundtrack.
Good: The fairly subtle looks are pleasingly far from overt £60,000 garish, while the coupe's practicality is surprising, with a huge 455-litre boot swallowing at least as much as upper medium saloons. Massive sports front seats are pleasant.
Average: The driving experience doesn't quite match the RS5's arch-rival M3, while a RV of 33.7% compared with the M3's 35.4% leaves it a little adrift on costs.
Poor: We struggled to get much above 20mpg compared with the official 26.2mpg, and a tank size of 65 litres means regular trips to the pump. Rear access is also tricky thanks to those sports front seats.
Verdict: Great noise, subtly appealing car with a hefty price tag that leads to costs of 133.3p per mile.
