BMW 118i Urban: One Minute Test Drive Review

What's new: The second-generation BMW 1-series arrives claiming to cure the ills of the first, in particular in terms of packaging and ride. This 118i petrol model also offers 19% more power than the previous 118 yet 4.2% less CO2 emissions.
Excellent: The performance impresses. The 170hp 1.6-litre petrol engine has a CO2 rating of 136g/km, one BIK band lower than its predecessor yet much quicker.
Good: Still being rear-wheel drive, unlike its rivals, the new 1-series is still the best-driving car in its class, if not quite as good a steer as its predecessor. The efficiency helps the 118i to a much better cost per mile than Audi's A3, despite the A3 being cheaper and having better RVs.
Average: The packaging is better but the cabin's still a little on the cosy side, and the boot could be bigger.
Poor: Although better in the metal than in pictures, the styling still isn't the prettiest in the sector.
Verdict: Competitive on running costs and good to drive, the 118i petrol version of the new 1-series stacks up as a performance version to drive, yet at 47.9mpg is pretty cost-efficient to run as a business vehicle.
