The start point for the best source of fleet information
The quest to offer smaller engines in larger vehicles continues with Ford setting a new emissions low for a full-size seven-seat MPV.
The Galaxy, and its S-max sibling, are both now available with Ford's 115hp 1.6-litre diesel engine, coming with stop/start technology to help it to an emissions figure of 139g/km and fuel economy of 54.3mpg. At present, VW's new Sharan is at 50.4mpg and 146g/km.
The 115hp diesel isn't as sluggish as it sounds like it should be. We were impressed by this engine in the Mondeo, and the efficiency gains far outweigh the performance drop-off compared with the 140hp 2.0 TDCi. It doesn't need to be worked particularly hard, although a stirring of the gear lever is needed to accelerate at motorway speed.
Engine aside, the Galaxy remains unchanged: good to drive, decent room for seven adults (or five and a huge boot) and practical.
