Mazda 5 diesel: Test Drive Review

Date: 01 June 2011   |   Author:

Category: Mini-MPV
P11D price: £21,785
Key rival: Ford Grand C-max

The diesel version of the new Mazda 5 Mini-MPV has arrived, a couple of months behind the two petrol alternatives.

The 1.6-litre engine replaces the 2.0 version in the previous 5, and is 5hp more powerful, at 115hp, yet offers 13.2% lower emissions (138g/km) and 14.8mpg better fuel consumption (54.3mpg), due in part to engineers shaving up to 120kg off the vehicle's weight. However, while emissions are a decent improvement, the car is still 9g/km off the 115hp Ford Grand C-max and 110hp Citroen C4 Grand Picasso, with the 110hp Renault Grand Scenic another 1g/km lower.

Our test vehicle, the range-topping Sport model, was very well equipped.

The engine offers surprisingly strong performance given its humble output. It certainly feels more useful than the slow official 0-62mph acceleration time of 13.7 seconds, 1.4secs slower than a Grand C-max with the same diesel power output.

As for residual values, only VW's Touran beats the Mazda's 33.6% retained value after three years and 60,000 miles. But the Grand C-max's better economy and slightly lower P11D price means the Ford, and Renault's Grand Scenic, comes out 0.6p per mile better than the 5's 52.2p figure, while the 105hp Touran breaks the 50p per mile barrier at 49.6p. The 5, though, does come in well below the Citroen C4 Grand Picasso for cost per mile.

The new 5 retains the sameseven-Seat layout as its predecessor. While that means there's decent space for four adults, luggage space is badly diminished for carrying five as one has to sit in the third row. But the diesel is a decent package, well equipped, with competitive running costs and better to drive than most. It's just that the new Ford Grand C-max or VW Touran are still the mini-MPVs most easy to recommend.
