Mercedes C220 CDI: One Minute Test Drive Review

What's new: Mercedes has ditched the confusing CLC badging seen on the previous model, while this 2.1-litre 170hp diesel variant promises low running costs along with handsome looks and upmarket appeal.
Excellent: The fit and finish inside is sublime. The cabin is of extremely high quality - it's also luxurious, but subtle and tasteful enough not to be considered over the top.
Good: Figures of 55.4mpg for the manual and 53.3mpg for the seven-speed auto are impressive. CO2 of 133g/km and 139g/km respectively, though not groundbreaking, are equally good.
Average: The Merc isn't quite as enjoyable to drive as an equivalent BMW 3-series Coupe. The engine is smooth and refined but a better marriage of power and CO2 can be found elsewhere.
Poor: It's expensive, especially when you start adding equipment. Our test car cost £43,695.
Verdict: Smart looks and a superb interior mean the C-class is one of the class leaders within the upper medium coupe sector, while low running costs and refinement add to the appeal.
