A few recent minor scuffs to bigger or prouder (in every sense) alloys of a couple of test cars have made me appreciate the relatively modest 17-inch '7-arm' alloys on my long-term A5 and their 'tucked-in' nature in relation to the Pirelli tyres that surround them.

Too many modern alloys trade shiny looks for practicality - especially when they encounter uneven and high-sided London side streets via tight parallel parking - but these ones still look Smart and in keeping within their wheel arches despite wheels of up to 20 inches on offer in the Audi catalogue. For practicality and a decent ride I'm happy rolling on 17s.
