Porsche Cayenne diesel: Test Drive Review

Date: 22 December 2011

Category: 4x4
P11D price: £46,338
Key rival: Range Rover Sport

The latest tweaks to the 2011 Porsche Cayenne are all under the bonnet, thanks to a new second-generation engine.

This means the 3.0-litre V6 diesel offers 245hp, 5hp more than before, while fuel economy rises to 39.2mpg from 38.0mpg. CO2 emissions have dropped by 6g/km to 189g/km, which equates to a 30% benefit-in-kind banding.

Improvements in efficiency have been achieved by new materials that have reduced weight by 20kg and lowered internal friction and resistance. Porsche says a new turbocharger, a revamp of the injection system, and enhanced thermal management also make a contribution.

The Cayenne remains an excellent premium SUV up there with British staple the Range Rover Sport. It feels like a big car, but good visibility helps this, and the interior makes drivers and passengers alike feel cocooned in luxury. Light steering takes some getting used to but handling is predictably excellent, and the ride is acceptable.
