Seat Ibiza FR 2.0 TDI: Test Drive Review

Date: 05 January 2011   |   Author:

Category: Supermini
P11D price: £17,121
Key rival: Mini Cooper D

Given Skoda's decision not to replace its diesel Fabia vRS, the choices for perk car drivers looking for something small, frugal and fun have been somewhat limited.

Enter Seat's Ibiza FR TDI. The 2.0-litre diesel hot hatch offers emissions of 123g/km, disappointingly close but not under the 120g/km mark, and consumption of 60.1mpg, yet acceleration of 0-62mph in 8.2 seconds.

The £17,000 supermini is well-kitted, with climate control, trip computer, sports front seats and a leather steering wheel all standard, while the sporty nature of the FR is displayed via specific bumpers, a honeycomb grille, silver door mirrors and specific 17-inch alloys.

To drive, the FR feels perky, yet not overtly sporty, which fits with its position of a halfway house between the standard range and the 'proper' hot hatch petrol Cupra model.
