VW Eos: Test Drive Review

Date: 15 June 2011

Category: Sports
P11D price: £24,515
Key rival: Renault Megane CC

VW facelifted the Eos coupe-convertible earlier this year, giving it the family face familiar from the likes of the Golf. The rear lights also take their cue from the new Passat, while the interior has also had a refresh.

The introduction of CO2-cutting Bluemotion tech at the same time as the facelift means CO2 is down to just 125g/km from 148g/km and economy is up to 67.3mpg from 50.4mpg. VW's brand prestige also means a good RV prediction of 37.9% compared with the equivalent Renault Megane CC's 28.9%, giving the diesel Eos driven here a cost per mile of 54.4p, 3.4p per mile better than the Renault despite it costing £2500 more.

The 140hp diesel offers impressive performance to go with the efficiency, especially given the weight of the folding metal roof, which tucks away in 25 seconds, reducing boot space from 380 litres to 205 litres.

While not sports car-like to drive, the Eos is perfectly pleasant, although our test car suffered from the odd creak and rattle, most likely due to the reduced rigidity of a car with no roof. But with the end of cars such as the Ford Focus CC and Vauxhall Astra Twintop, the Eos is the most efficient and cost-effective sunshine-hunter of its kind.
