VW Sharan 1.4 TSI S: Test Drive Review

Date: 09 March 2011

Category: MPV
P11D price: £23,165
Key rival: Seat Alhambra

The engine line-up for the new VW Sharan range includes a 1.4-litre petrol version as its entry point. Admittedly it's VW's turbocharged and supercharged TSI engine designed to offer the power of a 2.0-litre and the economy of a smaller unit, but still, a 1.4 in a big seven-seat 4x4 is still very much a new concept.

The downside is that it's not quite economical enough to get down to 160g/km for CO2 emissions, coming in at 167g/km, and with fuel economy of 39.2mpg. Plus, KwikCarcost predicts the petrol car's residual value at 30.0%, compared with a figure of 35.9% for the 140hp diesel, wiping out much of the business case for picking the petrol, as there's only a £1500 price difference between the two engines, and the diesel's 10mpg better off.

The 1.4 petrol is a quiet engine that is certainly far from a traditional 1.4, but in this case the initial extra outlay for the 2.0 TDI is money well spent.
