The start point for the best source of fleet information

BMW 118d SE: Test Drive Review

Date: 20 February 2012

BMW

Our reigning Business Car of the Year, the BMW 1-series, was voted the most attractive option of all for fleets in our recent awards issue, and the 118d is arguably the best all-rounder of the bunch.

Emissions of 119g/km and economy of 62.8mpg are highly competitive, but they don't come from a modest engine, as the 2.0-litre unit offers 143hp, so there's plenty of performance but it's delivered in a smooth, relaxed way.

Though somewhat staid, the 1-series' interior is sturdy and exquisitely built and there has been a significant increase in rear passenger space over the first-generation model.

As is typical with BMW, the 1-series remains the drivers' choice thanks to its rear-wheel drive layout and engaging handling. The ride is much improved over that of the outgoing model, so it's perfectly comfortable over long distances.

Marginally lower P11D values can be found with the less powerful 116d, and an Efficient Dynamics version of that model is on its way in March, promising 99g/km, which will no doubt command a price premium, but the 118d will still offer a strong incentive for business car users.
