Lexus GS450h Premier: Test Drive Review

Date: 17 December 2012

Category: Executive
P11D price: £50,815
Key rival: BMW 5-series

Lexus has launched a new exec-level GS model, again using hybrid power. The GS450h will in time be joined by a smaller-capacity hybrid model, but for now Lexus is only competing at the top end of a sector dominated by £30,000 four-cylinder diesels, although there is also a GS250 petrol-only model with fleet-prohibiting emissions of 207g/km.

Better packaging of the hybrid battery compared with the previous GS means a 55% increase in boot space, but it's still less than a BMW 5-series, and the hybrid system helps bring CO2 down to what is an impressive 141g/km for a rapid 343hp saloon capable of accelerating from 0-62mph in under six seconds. Kit levels are good, but the GS isn't up with rivals for driving experience, while RVs can't match the Germans. Against the only other hybrid executive model, BMW's Active Hybrid 5, the GS is more efficient and has a lower cost per mile, but that still can't match a good diesel.
