By the wall

A quickfire sequence of trips from Oxfordshire to Cornwall, Wales and Wiltshire have racked up nearly 1300 miles in a relatively short time for our 150hp Civic and established its credentials as a relaxed and frugal long-distance cruiser.

The journey to deepest south Wales generated a particularly healthy 59mpg, involving consistent use of the intuitive cruise control system and sixth-gear 70mph cruising. Average consumption is 55.2mpg, computing to a realistic 600-mile range, achieved by applying the green eco button and not exploiting the 2.2-litre diesel engine's muscular performance. Heeding the economy-related blue, turquoise and virtuous green halo adorning the digital speedo also helps. However, when refuelling it is all too easy to soak your shoes in diesel well before the modest 11-gallon tank is brimmed.

At sustained motorway speeds the Swindon-built hatchback's body shape seems genuinely aerodynamically efficient with minimal wind noise. This heightens awareness of the car's sensitivity to changes in road surfaces and consequentially higher tyre noise on some stretches of Tarmac.
