Long-term relationships have a habit of amplifying the positives, but also the negatives.

For example, front seat Civic occupants could benefit from lumbar support adjustment over longer distances.?Also, smaller drivers complain of the illuminated dials reflecting off the windscreen at night, while sunlight from the rear of the car bounces off the perspex, obscuring the view of the speedo and other pertinent dials.

Unusually for a six-speed manual transmission, reverse is to the right and back, parallel to sixth gear, and initially a conscious effort had to be made not to unwittingly snick it into first.

Another operational foible involves air conditioning temperature settings with too wide a gap between an effectively cool 'low' and the rather muggy 16°C.

However, our Civic's virtues far outweigh its faults, and the combination of strong performance, flexibility and long-range economy is exemplified by being able to execute a fourth to sixth gear change without protest from the torquey 150hp 2.2-litre diesel engine.
