The start point for the best source of fleet information

Our Fleet Test Drive: Peugeot 508 SW - 8th Report

Fuel cap

The current average economy for our Peugeot 508 over the past 6500 miles (the car arrived with 500 on the clock) stands at 47.8mpg, which sounds good, but is not brilliant given the 58.9mpg official stat for the 140hp HDI engine.

However, there are a few things that should be mentioned. The car has a fuel tank that's huge. At 72 litres there isn't much in the same sector that can beat it. But the result of having such a huge tank is that between fills the car carries out a wide range of jobs, and it's rare, to the point of never, that a whole tank is used during a motorway trip. This means that within every fill there's usually a fair amount of short, local, cold-start journeys at low mpg figures (I generally see 40-45mpg on the daily six-mile loop to drop one of the kids at nursery), and those low figures can put a serious dent in careful 70mph motorway cruises that can see economy knocking on the door of 60mpg.

In the next month or so I'll put my analytical hat on and test a few shorter gaps between fills to see if I can give a more useful picture of how good the mpg is in different scenarios.

Mind you, I do rather like not having to visit the petrol forecourt for 600-miles plus at a time.
