Vauxhall Astra GTC 1.7 CDTi Sport Ecoflex: Test Drive Review

Date: 08 August 2012

P11D: £21,145

Vauxhall's three-door take on the Astra, the GTC, offers fleet drivers all the attributes of the five-door model in a handsome exterior.

It's now available with a 119g/km 1.7-litre diesel engine, which doesn't make for as much of a headline as the 99g/km five-door Astra but is still pretty clean as far as sporty hatchbacks go. The rest of the figures make for good all-round reading for business drivers, with economy of 62.8mpg, 130hp and 0-62mph in 10 seconds.

Impressive though it is on paper and even in the metal, the GTC isn't as interesting to drive as its appearance suggests. As with the conventional Astra, it's refined, comfortable and handles relatively well, but there isn't any flair about it in the same way that there is with a warmed-up VW Golf or Ford Focus.

The GTC makes up for its shortcomings in other areas though, with a well-built and spacious interior, along with a competitive CPM of 51.2p.
