Audi A1 Sportback 1.6 TDI Sport: Test Drive Review

Despite being a hit with buyers, the lack of a five-door option until last year for the A1 supermini meant it was off the radar for many in the corporate sector. But an extra pair of doors, a seatbelt for the central rear chair and top-notch running costs make all the difference.

The Audi is still a small car, so those seeking practicality need to look further up the range. The on-paper figures from this 105hp 1.6 TDI Sport model look superb, though: 99g/km, 74.3mpg and an RV of 42.5% leading to a cost per mile of 37.8p.

That said, our test car struggled to exceed much more than 50mpg according to its trip computer, the stop/start system was largely inactive, and the A1 isn't the cheapest supermini around. Its excellent build quality, desirable badge and fashionable status are likely to keep it in vogue and make up for the shortfalls, though.
