Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC SE: One Minute Test Drive Review

What's new: Honda's new 120hp 1.6 diesel takes the car down into the lowest benefit-in-kind tax band thanks to emissions of just 94g/km.

Excellent: The performance on offer, given the on-paper power and efficiency figures, is impressive. Although the powertrain is different, it has similarities with the hybrid CRZ coupe where it feels like there is more power than the numbers suggest.

Good: A residual value of 38.8% helps give the Civic 1.6 a very impressive cost-per-mile figure of 41.2p.

Average: Although it's a decent driving experience, the Civic doesn't quite match the standard of the Ford Focus or VW Golf, while the interior also doesn't quite rival those two cars, and this SE?spec misses out on elements such as Bluetooth, auto lights and wipers and cruise control.

Poor: The old Civic bugbear of rear visibility is alive and well.?The aerodynamic bar across the rear window blocks rearward vision badly.

Verdict

Very impressive new engine for efficiency and performance in a car that now ticks pretty much all the boxes for both fleet and driver.
